K-Gr 2–Harris’s latest explores themes of self-care and body awareness through the story of Whirby, a high-achieving robot who is passionate about gadgeteering. When Whirby has the chance to compete in a bot battle, he is so excited that he can’t concentrate on anything else. Instead of powering down and recharging the night before the competition, he stays unplugged, practicing his moves until dawn. Ultimately, he runs out of battery before the battle even begins. Disappointed but not defeated, Whirby recognizes how the excitement to battle is depleting his system and takes steps to ensure a gentle bedtime routine in hope of a second chance. Souva’s busy, colorful, and layered digital images complement the narrative’s clear language, working together to capture emotions young readers will find relatable along with the importance of rest and care.
VERDICT A good addition to an SEL bookshelf, readers will easily relate to Whirby’s dilemma of needing to balance his excitement for the big battle with his need to rest and recharge.
