PreS-Gr 4–This book asks young readers how they would change the world. The adorable, vibrantly colored picture book gives the opinions of one girl (white, with dark hair): everyone would have a house and no one would be hungry, there would be buttons to press for wonderful smells whenever one wanted, and animals (except for the gross ones) would be allowed to go anywhere. Whimsical, bright pictures are a wonderful and equal match for the text. Readers are treated to lots of ideas for changing the world for the better, which could lead to different conversations about what they might do to change the world. With older children, the conversation might even turn to some real world problem-solving, but even the youngest readers could draw pictures about what changes they would like to see. This is a book with lots of potential.
VERDICT A terrific picture book that will work in many kinds of units for many types of readers, asking hard questions while also making problems surmountable.
