K-Gr 3—A girl is shown nostalgically poring over her family photo albums. Puzzled, she is examining how different her older sister has become. She wonders if she's been switched with someone else. She thinks back, searching her memory for clues of the transition: her sister's declining a tea party to work on a laptop, her choosing to watch television rather than go trick-or-treating, her general disinterest in playing, and her obvious physical growth. Like many teenagers, her sister has become secretive and spends much of her time in her bedroom behind closed doors. The narrator is genuinely concerned for sister's well-being and deeply misses spending time with her. It is at this sad moment that the older sister invites her into her room, where the two listen to music and dance. After a little while the older sibling asks, "When did YOU become so tall?" Endpapers mark the passage of time, opening with a kitten amid a line of dolls and closing with the same cat, now fully grown, sleeping among headphones and makeup. Rendered in muted watercolors and pencil, the illustrations display the action and a sense of isolation.
VERDICT Readers may see their own growing siblings reflected in this thoughtful book.
