K-Gr 2–Exploring words is fun! Some words are very similar, but changing one letter or sound makes a big difference; for instance, “duck” and “doc.” What if a duck were a doc? The concept is examined in this book, which is part of a multibook decodable early reader set. Simple illustrations with white backgrounds demonstrate the concepts. With only eight pages of text to read, this feels more like a pamphlet than a book. It is likely best consumed as part of the series rather than as a standalone title, especially with the price point for a single book being higher than that of early readers twice the length. Back matter with family engagement tips and a phonics review give value added and allow adults to extend the conversation and activity with young readers.
VERDICT A visual play on words for the earliest readers. Available only in paperback, so best suited for classrooms or homeschool settings as opposed to libraries.
