PreS-Gr 1—A little girl has the sniffles and there are things that her cold demands. Colds need a comfy bed by a window so the child can hear birds sing. A cold needs Grandpa's soft kisses and Dad's goofy jokes. As the story goes, a cold needs other things that offer comfort until the girl recovers. Once the cold is gone, the girl goes outside to play. With her cold-reddened nose, created with watercolors and colored pencils, the girl goes about her days in her sickbed with her pet dog and loving family nearby. Soft graphite lines and even softer washed-out colors create illustrations that are as calm and comforting as warm chicken soup. With two dozen or fewer words per page, the story makes a good bedside read-aloud or read-alone.
VERDICT A comforting book to share with a child experiencing the disagreeableness of a first cold.
