Gr 6-10–A romantic tale of Wendy Darling’s return to Neverland. It’s been six years since she left Neverland, and at 17, she is still in love with Peter Pan. She and her mother are constantly at odds with each other over Wendy’s lack of interest in suitors. To appease her mother, Wendy agrees to go to a masquerade ball and meets Liam Blackwell, a handsome and charming Naval officer. She quickly finds out Liam has his own ties to Neverland and follows him back to the island. The longer Wendy spends in Neverland, the more she begins to separate herself from her childhood experience on the island. Her relationship with Liam and her interactions with Peter as a young lady show her things are not always black and white, good and bad, pirate and Lost Boy. Her character development is intriguing, but her constant inner monologue becomes repetitive and extraneous early on; Wendy’s narration isn’t tight. The mystery of the shadow conjurer threatening Neverland is wrapped up as soon as Wendy realizes which life she prefers, home in London or Neverland, with no full explanation about how the shadow conjurer came to be in the first place.
VERDICT Pure fluff for readers who prefer flowery language over substance.
