PreS-K–Marker-and-watercolor collage illustrations show a very tall rabbit and a preschooler frog in the cozy surround of a school on the very first day. The small frog encounters others the same size: lion, monkey, pig, kitty, and more; these children are styled in chibilike proportions, while the rabbit adult has elongated limbs. The classroom is flattened and one-dimensional; outside, the sun is smiling as children enter the building.
VERDICT Welcome preschoolers, even the downcast kitten. This book is sure to calm “first day” butterflies and demonstrate some of the new things children will encounter, charmingly.
