K-Gr 4–A bowler hat-clad, Casper-styled ghost is in search of a home to haunt. Every spot he finds is occupied, from creaky houses to creepy sewers, with bad-tempered boo-ers in every nook and cranny. The other ghosts have suspicious slants for eyebrows, and their grim dispositions start to get the new ghost down. But an ending twist hints towards comforting familial eternity. These adorable ghosts, with their round white heads and expressive eyes, fill the pages with pathos. Mylie’s illustrations work in grays and whites, with occasional brown tones adding warmth to the shadows. The atmosphere is one of intimate, inviting eeriness. Perhaps this ghost will find a home in the book. And perhaps readers will, too.
VERDICT An emotional take on a ghost story, with heartwarming illustrations and an ending to bring a tear to the eye.
