Gr 2-4–What appears to be a simple book of puns and wordplay may have children’s brains turning cartwheels, and while the assortment is not organized in any discernible way, emerging readers will enjoy being “in” on the jokes. The unconventional illustrations help with meaning; a hand that emulates “tiptoeing” is accompanied by the sentence, “Your fingers have fingertips, but your toes don’t have toe tips, yet you can tiptoe, not tip finger.” The puns are based on some odd clarifications: “You don’t hit the wall, you hit the paint on it,” and “If you clean a vacuum, you become a vacuum cleaner.” Funny.
VERDICT For children who love joke books, this one has a little more meat, and is a suitable purchase for beginning reader shelves.
