Gr 6–8—These titles do an excellent job of describing the history of three 20th-century wars in which the United States has been involved. The main causes of each conflict are briefly described, and some of the major battles are discussed. Numerous archival photos with good captions appear in all of the volumes: some of those in Vietnam are in color. Some readers may find the placement of the information boxes annoying as they break the flow of the main texts, and the books don't have enough maps. Substantial back matter includes a time line, graphic representation of the scope of the war, a glossary, additional resources, and extensive source notes. The amount of information in these titles makes them solid additions.—Eldon Younce, Anthony Public Library, KS
These volumes present accounts of two unpopular foreign military conflicts during the twentieth century. Each relates events preceding American involvement, principal characters, major battles, and eventual outcomes. Vietnam also devotes attention to the domestic crisis and protests resulting from the war's escalation. Maps, archival photographs, and numerous inserts enhance the informative texts. Reading list, timeline, websites. Bib., glos., ind. Review covers these Essential Library of American Wars titles: Vietnam War and Korean War.
