Gr 7 Up—Very few materials for youth focus on America's own racism and use of concentration camps. Enter National Book Award finalist Marrin and his incredibly thorough title that begins not in 1941 but thousands of years before, helping listeners understand the culture and world events that led Japan to that fateful attack on December 7 and to racism in modern times. Although this work is scrupulously researched, the audio version ultimately sounds like a long college lecture, so the message might be lost on its target audience. However, the audio is a reasonable option for those who need to know this information but may not be interested in reading the print edition.
VERDICT A sensible choice for libraries that see a large circulation of nonfiction audiobooks or for schools looking to add options for students studying this subject.
