PreS-Gr 1–In this faux-Rosenthal book written by Ransom, Uni the Unicorn and the little girl walk together on a sunny ocean beach enjoying the beautiful day—until they see litter strewn about. They know the beach should be clean, but before they can act, they see a pod of dolphins swimming near the shore and come up with a plan to swim with them. Uni and the little girl find a paddle board that allows them to play in the water with the dolphins. Uni’s magic horn allows the unicorn to speak dolphin, so Uni understands when a dolphin shares the sad truth that trash from the beach gets out into the ocean and hurts the animals. To thank the dolphins for the magical day, Uni and the little girl set to work cleaning the beach. This early reader is well-suited for newly independent readers, especially those who are already fans of Uni the Unicorn. Candy-colored pictures by McCabe are based on art by Barrager.
VERDICT Bright pictures and familiar characters will appeal to those who enjoy a story about magical creatures and helping the environment.
