Gr 3-6–This high-stakes, intergalactic adventure novel lets readers choose their own ending. Readers take the role of geologist on a diverse and international crew of nine people who are returning from a space mission. All is going according to plan, until suddenly “you” wake up out of cryosleep to bright lights and blaring emergency alarms. An alien being has been detected on the ship, but all you see are your crewmates. Could one of them have been taken over by an alien intelligence? Readers must make a series of choices, solve puzzles, and decide which of the crew members to trust in order to find a safe resolution. With over 45 possible endings to the story, from alien mind-control to deep-space exile to a worldwide apocalypse, readers will feel compelled to find a better path through the thrilling novel. Character development and an overarching plot is lacking, but the high stakes and fast pace of the book will have tweens coming back for more. Black-and-white cartoon illustrations are scattered throughout. A diagram of the ship, character portraits and bios, and an answer key for the puzzles are also included.
VERDICT A high-interest, interactive adventure book for readers who prefer to engage with alternative novel formats.
