Gr 1–3—The author of "Enchanted Pony Academy" offers a lighthearted take on being careful what you wish for. When Brooke saves what she thinks is a dragonfly from her cat, she makes a startling discovery: fairies are real and they live in her backyard. In return for her rescue, Calla the fairy must honor a tradition from her realm: she will grant Brooke seven wishes, albeit with some ethical rules, such as the inability to make anyone do something against their will. Brooke wishes for the thing she loves most, but in excess: 100 cats. With the help of her best friend Izzy, Brooke must navigate the consequences of her wish. Calla and the two girls grow closer together, dispelling assumptions about one another in the process. At one point, Calla realizes through Brooke and Izzy's actions that humans are not so unkind and selfish as she had been taught in her realm's school. Likewise, Brooke and Izzy make strides of their own by fixing Brooke's wish-turned-disaster. Brooke is thoughtful, relatable, and kind. Loosely spaced texted makes it a perfect fit for new readers.
VERDICT An enjoyable story about friendship for those beginning to venture into chapter books. Hand this to fans of the "Rainbow Magic" series and other magical tales.
