Gr 1-2–Delightfully charming, this book looks at Mom, too busy working to be able to play with Jackson. For Jackson, waiting is agony, but this mother patiently offers alternatives until she can be free to enjoy their time together. And what a time they have! Exploring the garden and learning about beautiful trees, fruits, roots, and even ants. But more importantly, they both revel in just being together. Their love for each other is tender and sweet. Parents of young children will recognize themselves in every page and children will immediately be drawn in by Jackson’s impatience and boredom. Every child knows the frustration that comes from exhausting all their ideas only to be told to wait a little while longer. Lush, beautiful illustrations immerse readers in Jackson’s day. Each page brings a new perspective to capture the attention of children and invite them to pore over every element on the page. Plumeria, proteus, ginger, and coconuts are presented along with other not-so-ordinary fruits and flowers, offering a treat of new words and making this ideal for classroom use. This is a very good choice for introducing or discussing SEL issues like patience and respect.
VERDICT A relatable book with gentle examples for children of how to turn everyday struggles and into blissful moments of appreciation and joy.
