Rajan introduces readers to the guitar, violin, sitar, liuqin, the piano, and more. Each spread shows a child holding and playing an instrument which is paired with a text explaining the fundamental technique. Yakunova couples somewhat realistic depictions of the string instruments with stylized human figures. The outcome is a fun and informative illustration that supports a clear and concise text. As a bonus, readers are given brief instructions for making a tissue box string instrument and can also put a rubber band on the book to strum.
VERDICT Music education is such an important element in a child’s life; this promising series allows the learning and playing to begin as early as possible.
