Gr 6 Up–In Jenson Chapman’s mind, risks and unknown situations cause “Dread Spirals” and visions of worst-case scenarios. When his best friends, Maleek and Cooper, challenge him to sneak out on the night before middle school graduation and compete against three girls in daring challenges, he is certain that the night will end tragically. He has no idea that the escapade will not only challenge his character in ways he never imagined but also uncover huge secrets, test his close friendships, and prove that he really is a person of courage. The boys are typical eighth graders, and their dialogue and actions are humorous and believable, revealing their kindness and care for one another in a way that books covering these topics rarely do. The lessons are gently stated, as Jensen learns that he isn’t that different from his friends and that he can’t control everything. As a result of the adventurous night, he is ready to face high school with hope and gratitude to friends who, while they may not always seem to have his best interests and safety at heart, do care about him. The characters are racially diverse.
