K-Gr 4–High stakes and hilarity combine to great delight in this dramatic zoological rescue adventure in three parts. Mink, a cheeky child with light skin and braids that stick out, is shocked one evening to meet a baby zebra in the parks. Her shock grows when she discovers that, with a touch, she can feel what the zebra is saying. The panicked baby zebra, Gabriel, shares the harrowing tale of his parents’ kidnapping at the hands of the dastardly Mr. Spit, a pink-skinned, red-cheeked villain “whose boots were so brightly polished, he could see his own mustache reflected back at him.” With Mink’s help, Gabriel hopes to mount a daring rescue, and they’ll need the help of a whole menagerie to do it. Readers are sure to be hooked in by the tale’s fast-paced, funny prose, which will be excellent to read out loud. The text is woven through charming, appropriately dynamic, and eye-popping colorful illustrations that occasionally explode into full-bleed spreads.
VERDICT A perfect recommendation for fans of animal adventure stories of all stripes in the mood for a thrill and a laugh.
