Gr 4–6—Dragons, the "Wearle," arrive on Erth from the faraway Kimera in search of another group of dragons who disappeared long ago. The society of dragons is as hierarchical as that of Erth natives, the "Homs" (humans). Each is distrustful of the other; each seeks to destroy the other. That is, until Ren, a young Hom, bonds with a dragon and begins to speak dragon tongue. Actor Jonathan Keeble's rich, sonorous voice outlines the characters and brings the complicated tale to life.
VERDICT D'Lacey's series start is made more accessible through the even, well-paced narration that highlights the tension between worlds and brings the myriad characters into clearer focus. A great pick for fantasy fans. ["An exciting read for dragon lovers and fans of d'Lacey's "The Last Dragon Chronicles" and Tui T. Sutherland's "Wings of Fire" series": SLJ 12/16 review of the Scholastic book.]
