Gr 4–7—Zarf the troll and his friends Kevin Littlepig and Chester must contend with a wolf, which really strikes terror into the heart of Kevin, since he is a pig, son of one of the famed Three Little Pigs. After a humiliating incident with Sierra Scarlet, Zarf does not want to be the center of attention, but when Kevin and his family are captured by wolves, Zarf and Chester know they have to save the little pigs. When the wolves demand the surrender of Red Riding Hood's daughter, who happens to be Sierra, Zarf must help save not only his friend but his crush as well. Zarf is a likable character who uses his self-consciousness as a troll to full advantage and shows that the good guys do not have to be perfect. Graham Halstead's humorous narration provides characters with personalities that reflect their quirks.
VERDICT Full of amusing situations with just a splash of danger, this will appeal to fans of "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" and twisted fairy tales.
