Baby-Toddler–The first title in the series begins not at Easter, as the title suggests, but with the birth of Jesus, and introduces him as the new King. Readers quickly move through an overview of Jesus’s teachings and travels, before learning that not everyone agreed with Jesus. His arrest and crucifixion are very simply, yet straightforwardly, told, and each is given a single spread, with the rest of the book aptly focusing on the resurrection. The final pages show a happy, brown-skinned, modern family holding hands at a dining room table with a picture of Jesus nearby. While the text provides a serviceable retelling of the Easter story, the illustrations stand out for their simple design, use of color, and overall friendliness. Despite the serious topic, readers will likely find the images warm and engaging. Nearly every person in the book is shown with skin in some shade of tan to brown.
VERDICT For collections where Biblical Easter stories circulate well.
