Gr 1-3–Benny McGee has learned a lot about sharks for his report, but he is bewildered when a great white shark follows him home from school. He decides to let him in and learns even more things about sharks (for example, it takes them a really long time to brush their teeth). Young readers will delight in the combination of silliness and factual information. Every page has limited text (a few sentences to a few paragraphs) tucked in among cartoon illustrations. The art, rendered in grayscale with pops of blue, portrays the shark as simultaneously scary and adorably friendly. At the intersection of an advanced beginning text and simplest chapter book, this title has a lot that emerging readers will love and will keep them turning pages.
VERDICT A very simple beginning chapter book with charming photos. A purchase for most libraries.
