Gr 4-7–This sequel to
The Last Rhee Witch continues the unique perspective of blending Korean folklore with a sinister mystery. Ronnie Miller and her best friend Jack Park are just arriving from Seattle to Camp Foster in central Washington state for winter camp. Right away, readers are drawn into Ronnie’s thoughts on filling her Remembering bracelets and memories she had created in the previous story with camp friends, her witch aunties, and mystifying supernatural entities. Having a better grasp of her magical history, she is looking forward to a deeper development of her bewitching skills. But Ronnie is unpleasantly surprised when her sworn camp enemy Gigi runs smack into her best camp friend, Olivia. Ronnie sees right away that dokkaebi telekinesis is at play. Has she not banished all the evil spirits from the campsite since her past visit? Could this supernatural force be even more powerful than before? The same warm themes of friendship, family, and inner strength are explored in this story as they were in the previous novel. The book doesn’t really suit as a stand-alone, but it is a solid addition to a growing series. Characters read as multiracial. Friendships, jealousies, and fear resonate realistically.
VERDICT A strong continuation of a Korean folkloric mystery series.
