PreS-Gr 2–This beautifully illustrated book conveys the Christian story of Christmas through the eyes of the people of Bethlehem. The consistent rhythm and sentence structure of questions that include a noun followed by phrasing of “where” an event occurred is easy for children to understand: “The waters where the fish swim—is the King of Christmas there? No!” “The fields where the beasts roam—is the King of Christmas there? No!” This is a great book for teaching early reading principles and language components. The illustrations beautifully include color and detailed animals and people. Characters in the story are illustrated to show representation of a range of skin tones, making the book a good companion to other Christmas stories.
VERDICT With its simple, predictable text and bold illustrations, this book is great for teaching a Christian perspective on Christmas.
