K-Gr 3–The opening pages of this colorful picture book share a descriptive introduction to the origins and history of Juneteenth. Then, the alphabet portion begins. Each letter provides an important fact about the holiday and the significance of the fact. For example, “C is for a cultural celebration of community. A day for people to connect to the past, present, and future. Across the country you will find that Juneteenth creativity abounds—through cooking and crafting, and classes too.” Readers will find information on how different cultures celebrate Juneteenth worldwide; the meaning behind the flag; and the “grandmother” of this national holiday, Opal Lee. Colorful illustrations pair nicely with the text as red, a symbolic color of the observance, is featured prominently throughout. A brief glossary is included at the end.
VERDICT This book will serve as a basic but informative text for elementary students to gain exposure not only to Juneteenth but also to equality, diversity, and acceptance.
