PreS-Gr 2—An entertaining and insightful look at hands. The brightly colored work covers a variety of skills for which hands are used, including grabbing, scratching, playing, communicating, and more. Upon opening the book, readers are instructed to try a variety of movements ("RAISE your thumb!" and "POINT your index finger!"). The work is then divided into two sections ("Working Hands, Busy Hands" and "Happy Hands, Expressive Hands"). Younger readers will enjoy the animated illustrations that accompany the easy-to-read captions, while more advanced readers can tackle the short sidebars with information (for instance, why fingernails are hard). The illustrations are colorful and folksy, and most follow a young boy. At the end is a "Hand Certificate" stating that readers have the greatest hands of all.
VERDICT For librarians in need of light nonfiction that encourages physical activity and exploration.
