Gr 5 Up–No service. That’s all Blair can think about when she and her parents land on the legendary Scottish isle of Roscoe. Her parents’ dream has been to open a bed-and-breakfast on the island, but Blair can only think about what she’s left behind: her friends and their fight to preserve the planet. How can she keep in touch with no phone service? Feeling totally abandoned, she spends her time roaming the island hoping she can convince her parents to return home. While exploring, she encounters Cailleach, a mythical character who professes to be the protector of the island’s deer. She says she can ensure her parents return to the mainland if Blair will do three things for her. Blair readily agrees, but she has no idea how to make these things happen. She enlists the help of her new friend Alasdair, and they work together on the mission until one task goes horribly wrong. Blair is left friendless and has to figure things out on her own. However, Blair proves to be quite resourceful and is able to piece together the puzzle, discovering a few things about herself in the process. Readers will be captivated by a tale that weaves mythology, conservation, magic, and friendship into one engaging story that they will immediately read cover to cover.
VERDICT Beautifully written and accompanied by a glossary and a map of the island, this is a book to be shared again and again. Highly recommended for all libraries.
