K-Gr 3–Much to Avocado’s chagrin, Alligator decides to take over the alphabet book, announcing that fruits and veggies are boring and kids want something more exciting. Despite Avocado’s efforts to keep the text, Elegant Eggplants and Origami-Folding Oranges are being replaced with Eerie Electric Eels and an Ominous Octopus. After over half an alphabet of Alligator crossing out Avocado’s words and attempting to shoo the vegetables out of the frame, Avocado becomes an Angry Avocado and tries to beat Alligator at his own game by suggesting Rancid Radishes and Spooky Strawberries. Alligator agrees, but by the time they’ve added X-Rayed Xonocastles and Zombie Zuchinnis, the duo decides they might have made the book too scary. Humorous illustrations of animals invading the food’s activities, combined with the speech-bubble banter between Avocado and Alligator will delight those still learning their letters as well as older kids who are already reading independently.
VERDICT Find room on the shelf for another abecedarium! Most collections will want to add this silly and fresh spin on a classic genre.
