PreS-Gr 2–What would make Christmas better than ever? Snow, of course! Lucy and Noah are disappointed there isn’t a hint of snow on the night before Christmas. It’s difficult for the siblings to imagine the special day without it. Papa tries to lighten their mood by letting them open one present that night. Lucy opens her present and finds a beautiful snow globe. Mama mentions the house inside looks a lot like the one the family lives in. Lucy is quick to point out the difference—the house in the globe has snow, and theirs does not. As she lies in bed watching the glistening snow in the globe, Lucy feels something very light and cold land on her cheek. She wakes up her brother as she notices more snowflakes falling inside the room! Could it really be snowing inside of the house? This is an enjoyable book for young readers, who can relate to the characters’ disappointment, amazement, and happiness, and all readers, who get to see inside a child’s vivid imagination. The images are soft and delightful to look at. Muted black-and-white pencil sketches are perfect for the backgrounds of the illustrations. A touch of red pulls the characters and other select items forward and draws readers’ eyes toward the focal point of the page.
VERDICT Purchase for library holiday collections.
