K-Gr 3–This unique book focuses on the logistics of Hajj and beautifully introduces young readers to how people have been using different means of transportation to answer the call for Hajj. Muslims from all over the world journey in response to Prophet Ibrahim’s call. For centuries, pilgrims left their homes on caravans, fully embracing the physical and mental strain required to reach the destination. Today, Muslims still travel by foot from neighboring regions, while millions of others use trains, buses, ships, or planes. Though they all use different means of traveling, they all have one thing in common during their journey: chanting the answer to the call, “Labbayk Allah humma Labbayk,” meaning “Here I am, O Allah, here I am.” The book ends with an inspiring question: “How will you answer the call to Hajj?” Some of the pictures in the book show the early pilgrims in the backdrop of the region. Each spread is filled with intricate designs and diverse characters wearing the same type of clothing for this pilgrimage. The author has used the Arabic words and highlighted the integral parts of this religious act—such as Safa and Marwa, Muzdalfah, and Arafat—but there is no glossary or notes explaining their significance.
VERDICT This beautiful introduction of Hajj will leave young readers thinking about making plans for the pilgrimage, and is recommended for keen teachers and parents who are willing to do some research to explore the necessary steps of this journey.
