PreS-K—A cartoon retelling of the birth of Jesus. Plain prose simply describes scenes illustrated by pop-up, dioramalike spreads. The straightforward storytelling is not exactly lyrical: "An angel came to a woman named Mary and told her 'Do not be afraid! You will have a baby and he will be the Son of God!' " The illustrations stand straight and tall, with humorous touches adding interest.
VERDICT Robert Sabuda's The Christmas Story, which covers the same ground, is much lovelier and has more elaborate paper engineering, but this sturdy, workmanlike pop-up has more child appeal.
