K-Gr 2—An eclectic group of friends—a chicken, a fox, a moose, and a bear—decide to go beyond the hill and have a really BIG adventure. They begin to plan, but each one has a different idea as to the destination. Fox wants to go to Africa, Bear to the North Pole, Moose to the moon, and Chicken simply to the next village, where his Auntie lives. When they decide what to bring, some of the choices are puzzling. Fox pictures a giraffe out on the African savanna, yet he wants to bring scuba gear. Moose chooses a hat, a scarf, and sunglasses for his trip to the moon. They start to worry about what will happen on the journey and spend a sleepless night. When they set out the next day, their fears increase, and quite predictably they end up at Chicken's Auntie's house for a pleasant lunch. The pictures are sweet, child-friendly watercolors with lots of clean white space.
VERDICT This slight story offers little that is new. Stick with Eric Carle's classic Rooster's Out to See the World (Franklin Watts, 1972) for a story about taking on a big adventure without enough planning.
