Gr 4–8—A high-interest book, with comical illustrations, about a kid who wants to become a superhero, written in the tradition of."Diary of a Wimpy Kid." Josh Walker is an ordinary teenager who loves comic books and dreams about being a superhero. He decides to fight crime in his own little town. Through a series of hilarious episodic exploits, Josh eventually joins a local band of heroes. Collins has found the perfect blend of humor and action. The narrative moves quickly enough to appeal to reluctant readers while still providing enough development to give the character arc meaning. References to well-known superheroes like Batman are thinly veiled, offering teachers an opportunity to explore the concept of parody with a text that can keep students highly engaged.
VERDICT Funny and exciting, this is a great choice for reluctant readers.
