PreS–Bunny is having a lovely time planting a beautiful garden with his vegetable seeds. He is enjoying himself so much, he doesn’t notice a big storm cloud. Bunny runs for cover under some daffodils, and when the storm is over, he goes to investigate. Sadly, his garden is demolished, and Bunny doesn’t know how he is going to fix it himself. Luckily, his friends appear to help. Illustrations are bright, colorful, and work well with the text. When the text reads, “Then out across the hill,/ Bunny saw a joyful scene,” the illustration is a pig, duck, sheep, chicken, chicks, turtle, and frog at the top of the hill, heading toward Bunny and ready to assist him in rebuilding. All the friends pitch in with planting, raking, and digging to restore the garden. The turtle works the hose, and the pig pulls a cart with frog on top, as the frog drops seeds into holes in the ground. Even the slugs help with a tiny shovel, pail, and rake. The illustrations provide opportunities for discussion about friendship and what each of the animals is doing. At the end, the friends celebrate underneath a giant rainbow: “With help from his friends Bunny’s heart felt aglow,/ As everyone partied/ Beneath a giant rainbow.”
VERDICT Recommended as a title that stresses the importance of friendship.
