Gr 4—7—These books are fun and informative. Each well-organized title starts with an overview, offers some specific examples, and includes additional facts or tips and resources. In the first book, Catel defines activities that encompass adventure and amazement and then leads readers through a discussion of sideshows, movies, and daring stunts (some of which include fire). Each volume is organized in the same fashion, starting with a definition of the title. They all feature dramatic archival and full-color photos on nearly every page. In Animal Survival, the first chapter introduces resilient creatures that beat the odds and then follows with their journeys, animal heroes, and their work while surviving natural disasters. Extreme Sports and Wilderness ask readers, "Are You Nuts?" to want to do the things these athletes dare to attempt. These are books that youngsters will enjoy and talk about.—Patty Saidenberg, George Jackson Academy, New York City
Stunts covers such feats of strength, endurance, and daring as sword swallowing, fire walking, and extreme diving. Extreme Sports features activities from snowboarding, rock climbing, and skydiving to wheelchair flips. Captioned photos, sidebars, pull-quotes, and graphics make for busy pages, but extreme researchers will be up for the challenge. Both books caution that the manuveurs aren't for amateurs.
