Gr 4-6–Wally Crenshaw, who is white, is obsessed with superheroes, following their exploits in the newspapers in the hopes of someday joining their ranks. The little town of Crumbly-by-the-Sea, NJ, seems like an unlikely spot for superheroes or villains to land, but he is ready just in case. Wally has cried wolf one too many times, and most of Crumbly’s residents tolerate his exploits with something between amusement and ridicule. But this time, he’s actually right about the super activity. With an overly complex plot, too many characters to keep track of, and lengthy, comic book–style banter, this title will likely be a hit only with those who are big fans of superhero universes.
VERDICT With limited character development and few fresh plot twists, this is not a first purchase.
