Sun and Moon Sisters

PreS-Gr 2—Sun and Moon are sisters who rule the day and night, respectively—until the day they begin questioning which one is more important. When they switch roles to satisfy their mutual envy, they cause discord among all of Earth's creatures. Sun stays up all night to take Moon's place, but it is much too bright for the children to sleep, and the plants turn brown and wilt from the relentless heat. Moon comes to the rescue and turns day into night, but since she stubbornly takes over for Sun, the next morning is still dark, cold, and gloomy. Children cry out for Sun to return, insisting that the sisters stop quarreling and restore balance once and for all. With that, Sun and Moon decide that they're indeed different but equally important nonetheless. This wonderful picture book evokes a sense of harmony through pictures and words inspired by a blend of modern and traditional Asian artwork and folklore. Earth tones juxtaposed with bursts of color in mixed media and watercolor create vibrant imagery that thoughtfully reflects nature and honors the spirit of multiculturalism.
