Gr 6 Up—This DVD takes viewers on a tour around the 10 national parks in New York City and New Jersey. Viewers are shown the inside of Federal Hall, the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, the African Burial Ground, Grant's Tomb, Theodore Roosevelt's birthplace and his home Sagamore Hill, and other historic sites. Each location is introduced in about five minutes as the narrator explains the highlights. The description of Ellis Island is the most fascinating and complete. The rest of the sites are given merely quick overviews. As the narrator explains, "The best way to appreciate national parks is to visit them. This film just touches on the highlights of each park." Additionally, this educational film is filled with still photographs and soothing background music that will put most teenage viewers to sleep. It is useful for visitors to New York City who want a quick overview of the national parks, but it does not replace an actual visit.
VERDICT Useful in small bites for visitors, but too slow for most middle and high school students.
