Gr 1–2—One starry evening, a baby blue dragon jumps into Alfie's yard and magically changes into a white kitten. No one believes the boy's claims that he's found a stardragon, and his family members and neighbors continually miss evidence of its sudden transformation; the creature changes shape whenever there's a loud noise or commotion. Alfie realizes that the stardragon is lonely for its mother, so he wishes on a star for her return. A tabby appears in the trees to reclaim her offspring, then calls down a clowder of stardragons to prove their existence to the doubters. Serra's palette is successfully unique with grays, fuchsias, and teals, enhancing the scenes of fancy.
VERDICT The concept of Butterfield's story nurtures the imagination, but the repetitive text pattern distracts from the whimsy.
