Gr 5 Up–In the Edo region of Japan, Hyo Hachizuka is doing what he can to get by in life. His family suffered greatly since the day his father went missing while investigating corruption in their government, and while Hyo was never one to be physically strong, he is trying to earn employment with his town’s police force. However, things seem to take a turn for the better when he crosses paths with Spider-Man, as well as a bottled symbiote that gives Hyo the superhuman powers the notorious Venom possessed. With Hyo’s newfound pal and abilities, will he be able to solve the mystery of what happened to his father? This manga is a dependable combination of Japanese culture and some of Marvel’s favorite mainstream cast members. Aimed at younger readers, the title does a laudable job of keeping the plot simple to follow. Newcomers to the world of Marvel will be eased in smoothly, and fans of manga art won’t be disappointed by Aoki’s fun visual style. Action scenes particularly stand out in their dazzling full-page layouts and never get too over-the-top for squeamish readers. Though Hyo is older than most middle grade graphic novel protagonists, his doubtful demeanor and understandable anxieties make him a relatable character for kids struggling to believe in themselves. A secure selection to give to those who want to see Marvel in manga form, or experience either for the first time.
VERDICT A nice blend of the western Marvel-mania in a manga format that will charm both readers already in-the-know and appease those who are just getting their first tastes.
