PreS-Gr 2–Lucy is having a yard sale. Snoopy and Woodstock, who love yard sales, are excited to attend. Spotting an empty fishbowl at the yard sale, Snoopy and Woodstock imagine that they are deep-sea divers, but their daydream is interrupted by Lucy, who informs them that the fishbowl costs 50 cents. Having no money, Snoopy and Woodstock offer dog bones and birdseed to trade, but Lucy refuses. Then, inspired by an idea from Linus, Lucy offers the fishbowl to Snoopy and Woodstock in exchange for services—namely, painting the fence, cutting the grass, doing the laundry, and fixing a flat tire on her bike. Predictably, Snoopy and Woodstock fail at all the tasks in comical fashion, and Lucy angrily gives them the fishbowl in exchange for them no longer doing any chores for her. Adapted from
The Snoopy Show and based on the
“Peanuts” comic strips, this easy reader is serviceable, but lacks the wit, charm, and humor of the originals. Illustrations feature recognizable character designs but don’t always match the text. Still, young fans of the comic strip will enjoy reading about their favorite characters.
VERDICT An unremarkable, passable easy reader.
