Gr 3–7—Alex Frankovitch may not be the biggest kid in his class, but he is the biggest clown. The trouble is that his mouth keeps getting him in trouble. In the first title, Skinnybones, Alex may be a terrible baseball player but he's going to go down swinging against the best pitcher in his league. In Almost Starring Skinnybones, he has just come back from starring in a TV commercial and he's letting his quest for fame go to his head. Maxwell Glick voices Alex with enthusiasm as the boy gets into one scrape after another. The original publication date on Skinnybones is 1982, but the book does not feel dated. The ending to the second story does feel rushed, though, and adults may tire of Alex's antics.
VERDICT Fans of Park's other novels and "Wimpy Kid" devotees will enjoy these.
