K-Gr 4–Our oceans and rivers are home to over one billion sharks, across 500 species of different shapes and sizes. The scientist-authors share facts about sharks that readers may not know. They quickly cover topics such as where to find a shark, sharks’ teeth, how they feed and mate, as well as some cousins of sharks that live in the ocean. They also touch on the importance of sharks in the ecosystem, as well as the negative effects humans have had on the shark population due to hunting. Digital cartoon artwork is a feast for the eyes with bright colors and detailed (but not too scary) sharks. Many of the illustrations cover an entire spread, with the text floating around them like bubbles in the ocean. The text capitalizes and bolds the name of the shark that is being discussed to help readers follow along. However, due to the different sizes, fonts, and placement of the text, some readers will have a hard time reading on their own. Each spread has a heading that indicates the topic being discussed.
VERDICT This is great for shark enthusiasts looking to pick up a few extra tidbits of knowledge, but it’s otherwise an additional purchase.
