PreS-Gr 2–This bright and spunky follow-up to Scrim’s first New Orleans adventure brings a dose of seasonal cheer. Scrim the scruffy pup is sound asleep when a sweaty, nervous Santa tumbles down his chimney asking for help. Jolly Old St. Nicholas is lost and, having read about Scrim’s clever city escapades in the papers, knows he’s the right pup to guide him through the streets of the city. Scrim leads Santa, his elves, and the reindeer from house to house, delivering presents that celebrate the spirit of New Orleans: a roux spoon, a Mardi Gras spear, and more. As they travel, Scrim reflects on the places he’s been and the path that led him here, before finally returning to the only place he wants to hang his collar now: his home. Told in simple rhyming text with energetic, scribble illustrations—perhaps nodding to the concrete art found around the city—this story follows a scrappy dog who helps a holiday legend spread joy, while rediscovering his own.
VERDICT A fun revisiting of the story of Scrim and the city of New Orleans, while indulging in the spirit of Christmas with festivity and flair that only the bayou can bring.
