Toddler-PreS–A delightful tale about a baby named Scamp who learns to love both her similarities and her differences from her pet cat. Scamp’s black cat Hector does everything with her from sleeping to attacking the vacuum cleaner when they play. The detailed gouache, watercolor, and colored pencil illustrations portray how similar pink pajama–clad Scamp and Hector are in shape and size, so that Scamp’s declaration that her house has two cats (“one black and one pink”) appears true. In one day, Scamp surprises herself by standing on her two feet, enjoying a bath, and using a spoon at dinner. It’s when Hector gets left out in the rain and Scamp finds that she can stand and open the window that she realizes being a person can be useful. No other people appear in the story, leaving the focus on the heroine and her companion.
VERDICT An adorable tale sure to resonate with kids learning their own independent skills.
