K-Gr 1–Sabrina Sue, a precocious chicken, dreams of flying high in the sky. Though her farm friends discount the idea as silly and scary, their discouragements only crystallize her will to fly. She and an unnamed frog friend make a bumpy, multipart journey, which ends in a field when Sabrina Sue finally spots the sky (why she wasn’t able to see it prior to this moment is a bit confusing) and decides it’s time to fly. She dons a parachute backpack, runs fast to catch wind, and is transported into the sky. As she predicted, flying fills her soul with gladness, and she takes a selfie to memorialize the experience. She and her frog friend then somewhat abruptly return to the farm to report their success. Illustrations are colorful and cartoonish with some speech bubbles. Several pages contain multiple vignettes that feel a little cluttered and might have benefited from the use of frames. The story is funny and cheerful, but also has some holes that interrupt the smoothness of the read.
VERDICT This title is a good option for libraries needing to fill out an early reader collection, especially where the other “Sabrina Sue” books check out well.
