PreS-K–Spring has finally arrived, and Cricket decides to go for a walk and visit his friends. On this venture, he encounters Spider, Bee, Ladybug, and Centipede, who all happen to each have a predicament. However, as Cricket is learning about the issues affecting his friends, he doesn’t see why these problems are so important. After all, these concerns have never impacted him. It’s time that Cricket learns a lesson on empathy. Award-winning Spanish children’s books author Isern offers young readers a delightful Spanish-language picture book that provides food for thought. The medium size two- to four-line black text paragraphs are mostly set on the top of the page, allowing enough space for the full-size page illustrations. The narrative contains words that can be used by caregivers and educators to stretch young listeners’ vocabulary. Illustrator Rigaudie uses a palette of black and shades of blue, yellow, and green to bring the tale and its characters to life. The detailed renderings include curved lines that add movement and vitality to the characters and the environment. This book could be used in a preschool storytime or in a classroom unit highlighting friendship.
VERDICT A strong Spanish-language selection to add to mindfulness shelves, especially those in need of titles emphasizing empathy.
