K-Gr 3–A pair of siblings explore the desert that borders their home in this Spanish-language translation of Peña’s
Sundust. As they walk into the desert on a hot day, they leave home behind, exploring life in the dry terrain. Incredible plants survive one of the harshest climates, creatures make it their home, and rocks seem to watch and listen as the days pass. The siblings, who have brown skin, marvel at the world around them, imagining that they are traveling to outer space, adventuring up high until they reach the sun and absorb the sundust themselves, bringing it home with them. The two siblings marvel at the beauty of the desert and of their home as the sun sets. Expressive, often lyrical text shares the awe the siblings have as they explore the world around them, the beauty of the animals as well as this special habitat they live in, and the magic of childhood as two children use their time to explore the outdoors. The warm, mixed-media illustrations serve up the heat of the desert and the tingling of the skin, allowing readers, too, to experience all the wonders of the Earth.
VERDICT An ode to the magic of the desert and the wonders of exploration and imagination, this Spanish-language picture book is an excellent addition to children’s collections.
