Toddler-PreS–This early reader starts abruptly, with penguins working together to build a float for a parade that begins at 2:00 p.m. One of these penguins, fancily dressed, carries a ring box and the narrator informs readers that he will open it “after he wins the Best Float vote.” Various birds, including flamingos, eagles, turkeys, and dodos, are walking in the parade when catastrophe strikes. Stemple employs sound words to describe how the penguins’ float untwines from the car driving it: “Squeak...Creak...Whap, whap, whap...What is that?” All of the birds work together to fix the situation, and a happy ending ensues. The text uses its rhyming scheme well, and the font will be easy for younger readers to decipher. Brightly colored, drawn illustrations are inserted in between text.
VERDICT An additional purchase.
