Toddler-PreS–An anthropomorphic moon introduces itself to young readers with some basic facts: “I’m a rock!” and “It takes me about 27 days to orbit Earth. To orbit means to circle around a planet.” The final spread has an easy activity to show young children how the moon reflects the sun’s light throughout its orbit and contains a diagram of the moon’s phases. Paper collage illustrations feature the moon, earth, and sun with friendly, expressive faces; in a spread explaining the moon’s orbit feature, the Moon wears a sweatband and the Earth holds pom poms saying “you can do it!” Language is presented in English and Chinese characters and transliteration. (The book is also available in Mandarin with traditional characters and pinyin or zhuyin transliteration, simplified characters with pinyin transliteration, and Cantonese with traditional characters and jyutping transliteration.)
VERDICT This charming board book introduces basic facts about the moon in a fun and appealing way and will find a home in most collections.
